Is It For Everybody?
I’m happy to say that anyone can learn Reiki. I’ve even met children who have learned how to utilize the benefits of Reiki healing.
My favorite quote on the matter is from the International Center for Reiki Training:
It does not take years of practice. It is simply passed on from the teacher to the student. As soon as this happens, one has and can do Reiki. Because of this, it is easily learned by anyone.
-Wiliam Lee Rand
So yes, it is for everybody!
My Start With Reiki:
I have to be honest, when I first came across Reiki I was a skeptic.
The promised benefits seemed too good to be true and the idea of being able to tap into a foundational universal energy seemed a little fake and hocus pocus to me.
But I had also been a long time doubter of the power of meditation and yoga until I tried them and experienced the amazing benefits of a regular practice of both.
So I thought to myself, I’ll give it a shot and try to learn Reiki myself. I spent a long term researching Reiki and the more I read the literature the more it made sense to me. I share a story here of how Reiki helped me get up, and keep moving forward.
How I See Reiki and Use It:
For me, Reiki was an extension of the yoga and meditation (think Chakras). I already practiced, except with a approach focused on treatment and healing.
Meditation helped me become in tune with my mind and yoga helped me become mindful of my body. Reiki helped me become in tune with the energy that surrounds all of us. The way I like to think about it, Reiki is to meditation and yoga as the soul is to mind and body.
Reiki helped me treat issues I was having with my back. I had been doing physical therapy for a while and it was helping my physically. I worked with my wife Erica who helped supplement my physical therapy with Reiki healing and I feel it helped me really improve the benefits of the physical therapy.
So How Do I Learn?
The overview of the learning process is pretty straightforward. To get going with Reiki, you need to have an attunement from a Reiki master. Once Level 1 and Level 2 attuned, there are three degrees of progression that you can complete as you please. For some, a simple attunement and the first degree will suffice. I’d suggest the first degree as a good starting point.
A good strategy for finding a Reiki practitioner is word of mouth. Local practitioners of similar therapies such as acupuncture, shiatsu, reflexology, massage, and homeopathy often know one another may be able to refer you.
Alternatively, you can try looking at community bulletin boards in yoga studios or health food stores. We were lucky enough to find Reiki classes at our local community center.
I’m Not Ready to Dive in Yet, Can I Start at Home?
Absolutely! Though there is some contention on this in the Reiki community, I personally feel one can get going initially from home, and eventually get involved with the broader Reiki community if you find the practice and Art of Reiki to be helpful.
We’re building a community forum right here on Reiki Helper, so stay tuned.
